FEATURED: St. Louis CITY SC Coverage (2023)
The long wait for an MLS team in St. Louis, known to some historians as the First Soccer Capitol of America, is finally over. St. Louis CITY SC officially debuted in February 2023, nearly four years after Major League Soccer announced the Gateway City would get an expansion team.
The first season was quite a memorable one. St. Louis rattled off five consecutive wins to begin its inaugural campaign and finished the regular season with 17 wins, both MLS records among first-year expansion teams. CITY also earned the top seed in the Western Conference with 56 points. Despite the early strides, playoff hopes were short lived, as St. Louis was swept in an opening round playoff series against cross-state rival Sporting Kansas City.
Throughout the year, I worked on several digital feature stories, coordinated with our art team for graphics and earned credentials to cover three key games: CITY's home opener, their first game on FOX 2 airwaves and their first playoff match.

America’s first soccer capitol prepares for a major milestone: The inaugural season of St. Louis CITY SC.
The 2023 MLS season kicks off Saturday, Feb. 25 with CITY SC visiting Austin FC in Texas for the first regular-season match in franchise history. CITY SC returns to St. Louis next weekend for the home opener on Saturday, March 4.

Years in the making, it’s almost time for St. Louis CITY SC to kick off its inaugural season!
The 2023 MLS season begins Saturday, Feb. 25 with CITY SC visiting Austin FC in Texas for the first regular-season match in franchise history. CITY SC returns to St. Louis next weekend for the home opener on Saturday, March 4.
CITY SC will start the season with 27 active players on the first-team roster. Only eleven players can take the field at one time, and starters will generally see the bulk of playing time. FOX 2 has collected notes and information about a handful of players you can expect to see competing on the field at CITYPARK this season.
