Day or night, glove or bat, St. Louis Cardinals rookie Brendan Donovan has been a force everywhere the team has placed him. And that covers a lot of ground.
Only 44 games into his major league career, Donovan has played six positions and hit from all nine spots in the batting order this season. He's delivered to the tune of a .341 batting average, .913 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and .975 fielding percentage. So far, it adds up to a 1.8 WAR (wins above replacement), best among National League rookies.
"You can never question that kid's effort," Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said. "You play him anywhere and he's going to give you his A-game. He's going to give you everything he has."
It might faze some youngsters to bounce all around while they get their footing in the big leagues, but Donovan embraces it.
“My college coach said, 'You better learn how to be comfortable being uncomfortable,'" Donovan said. "I kind of accepted that. I go where I’m told and try to get on base for guys behind me."
